I am a Japanese to English translator and medical English editor specializing in academic manuscripts. I applied my experience in language and science that I gained while formally studying science in both Japanese and English to start my career as a freelancer in 2012. My primary goal as a medical translator and editor is to help Japanese scientists share their research with the world.

Thanks to my educational experience, I am fluent in scientific writing in both Japanese and English. I wrote over 50 research papers in English and 12 in Japanese while studying for my BA in Biology, which gave me a deep understanding of scientific writing in both languages. Now, I almost exclusively translate and edit medical research and continue to hone my skills by reviewing editor feedback on my translation work.

I am also skilled in researching terms and concepts. Another advantage my biology degree offers is that I know where to look for reference materials. Before I finish working on a research paper, I read other papers on the topic, review any relevant anatomy, and triple-check terminology using bilingual academic publications. This approach ensures not only that my terminology is correct, but also that the paper makes sense within the broader scientific context.

In addition to my scientific experience, I am confident in communicating with Japanese clients. My two years of experience communicating with Japanese clients as an office assistant taught me how to communicate respectfully and resolve issues. I have spent a good deal of time exchanging questions with clients, so I know the most effective way to phrase requests for clarification. When clients question words I have used or edits I have made, I politely explain my word choice using references and work with them to improve the text until they are completely satisfied.

私は医学論文を専門とする日英翻訳者・英文校正者です。日本の中京大学への留学を経て2012年にSouthwestern大学理学部生物学科を卒業し、科学と語学の経験を活かしフリーランス翻訳者・校正者として働き始めました。翻訳・校正の仕事を通じて日本人科学者達の研究成果を世界に伝えるための支援を行いたいと考えております。

大学にて生物学を専攻時、50本を超える英語の研究論文と、12本の日本語による研究論文を執筆し、サイエンス・ライティングの豊富な経験を積みました。その経験から、2か国語で科学に関わる執筆を行う事について、より深く理解できるようになりました。現在私は、医学研究分野を専門にする数少ない翻訳者として活動しています。さらに翻訳の校正者からのフィードバックを参照することで、自身のスキルの向上に努めてきました。

用語や概念の調査方法にも精通しています。生物学を専攻したもう一つの利点として、同分野に関わる適切な参考資料を見つけることに自信があります。研究論文の翻訳・校正を納品する前に、同じトピックの論文に目を通し、関連する解剖学の情報を調査し、さらに二か国語で論文が掲載されている学術誌で専門用語を何度も確認します。こうしたアプローチを通じて、適切な専門用語を選択していることを確認するだけでなく、私の訳した・校正した論文が、幅広い科学の文脈においても理解されるものとなっていることを確認します。

日系企業とのコミュニケーションに関する自信もあります。オフィスアシスタントとして2年間務めた際に、日本の企業とコミュニケーションを取る機会が数多くありました。その際、日本のクライアントに敬意を払いながらコミュニケーションを図り、さらに問題を共に解決していく方法を学びました。クライアントに問い合わせを行う業務を数多く担当しましたが、これにより、詳しい説明を相手に求める際に、どのような日本語表現を用いるべきかの知識を得ることができました。クライアントが私の翻訳・校正内容に関して問い合わせてきた際は、自分が翻訳・校正作業時に選択した用語を、参考資料を用いながら丁寧に説明します。クライアントが翻訳・校正の品質に十分満足していただけるまで、先方と共に作業を進めて、翻訳テキストを改善していきます。
